Story
Yaohiko Honten is one of Nagoya’s oldest catering businesses, with a history of around 300 years. To create new corporate value and realize further growth while making the most of the company’s traditions, Studio Details assisted with both DX and branding. The project was born from a conversation with the people at Yaohiko Honten about what kind of company it should be. This led to a project that would update Japan’s “Issho mochi” tradition into a more contemporary version, to pass the tradition on to future generations. Alongside the product development, we produced all of the graphic tools, including the logo, furoshiki wrapping cloth, and packaging. This project has created new possibilities for the client’s business, including creating connections with new clientele and rolling out the business nationwide.

Approach
Issho mochi is a Japanese tradition in which a large round rice cake, known as issho mochi, is wrapped in a large cloth and put on the shoulders of a baby on their first birthday. We proposed transforming this tradition from a “ceremony” to present the new one-year-old to grandparents and other family members into a “photo shoot” to preserve memories of the cuteness of the child. This would give the tradition greater appeal to younger generations and create a new and fun experience. For the various accessories needed for the issho mochi tradition, including the furoshiki wrapping cloth and erabitori cards, a set of cards showing various objects that the child chooses from to predict what kind of future the child might have, we combined organic shapes, such as vegetables and animals, with patterns drawn in paints and pastels, creating a design that would look good in photographs while also giving a sense of tradition and discernment. The project was designed to turn the event of having the child carry the issho mochi on their back into a fun experience in itself.
